At least 14 clinics have been damaged in severe storms that hit parts of the Eastern Cape.

The humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers says more than a thousand homes have been partially or completely destroyed in the Raymond Mhlaba Municipality.

Founder, Dr. Imtiaaz Sooliman says hospitals in Alice, Fort Beaufort, and Winterberg TB Hospital also need urgent repair.

"The district health director is sending Gift of the Givers a record of all the clinics and hospitals that need urgent attention. We will look at the cost involved and send a building team immediately to help as far as possible", he said.

Sooliman says it is important that the national Department of Human Settlements get involved to assist people who lost their homes.

He says they have distributed food parcels to 715 families, provided mattresses and hygiene, and will also look to bring additional support in terms of clothing and building materials.
