Several people killed in PE shootings

Port Elizabeth police say a 22-year-old man was shot dead in broad daylight in Bloemendal on Thursday.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans, said Rian Hambritch, was gunned down in Adriaanse Street.

Police are investigating a possible link to gangs.

Meanwhile, two men were shot dead on Wednsday night in separate incidents.

Labans said 19-year-old Tyler Boucher was gunned down in Lodewyk Street in Bloemendal while 24-year-old Gary Rademeyer was shot numerous times by eight men in Yellowood Street in Arcadia.

His 22-year-old girlfriend was wounded.

No arrests were made in any of the shootings.

Meanwhile, police are expected to beef up patrols on some taxi routes after taxi operators yesterday demanded an end to gangsterism.

Taxi operators say they've fallen victim to gangs who extort money from them and have also been robbing them.

Labans says police agreed to also put undercover police on taxis while also urging taxi operators to immediately report any criminal activity.

On Thursday, DA mayoral candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay, Atholl Trollip, led a Gangs Must Fall march in the Metro.

Trollip said he received a memorandum from community members fed up with ongoing gang violence.

"We believe that the best way to deal with gangsterism is to develop a Metro police force made up of people who live in the various communites.  We can create employmen through that as well and also those people who live in the communities know the gangsters and they know where drugs and illegal alcohol is being sold and they can deal with those issues," Trollip said.

"So, we believe that the most critical issue in dealing with the scourge of gangsterism is to create a Metro Police Force that will rid the streets of gangsters in Nelson Mandela Bay."
