The SA Municipal Workers Union says it has had several meetings with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality about the payment of back-pay to certain employees in the Safety and Security Directorate who were re-graded last year.
Samwu regional chairperson, Xoliswa Tom, says the security officers, were volunteers in 2002 and appointed as law enforcement officers in 2009, but on the wrong grade.
He says when this was corrected last year, they've had endless talks with the Municipality about securing the back-pay for the security officers.
Speaking to Algoa FM News, Tom also accused the Municipality of pulling out of scheduled meetings at the 11th hour.
"Since February last year we have been telling employees that we are not getting a breakthrough, because they don't seem to take matters seriously. That is why we are here today." he said
Meanwhile, Metro spokesperson, Roland Williams told Algoa FM News that processes needed to be followed in order to address workers' issues...
"In order to process such request and negotiations there are forums, structures and processes and systems in place that must be followed. We appeal to workers to understand we cannot resort to any unlawfulness. We are not denying their rights" he said.
