Several MEC table their budget policy statements in the Bhisho Legislature


Eastern Cape MEC for Human Settlements, Helen Sauls-August, is scheduled to table her budget policy statement in the Bhisho Legislature on Wednesday.

In her policy speech she said that an amount of R2.29 billion will be spent on human settlements developments in the 2015/2016 financial year.

According to a Department statement, the budget comprises of the Human Settlements Development Conditional)Grant, the Expanded Public Works Incentive Grant and its Equitable Share from the provincial budget allocation.

Sauls-August says a large portion of the budget will be spent on building houses in rural areas and upgrading informal settlements.

She says some of the areas in the Eastern half of the province that stand to benefit from her budget include Ntabankulu, Lusikisiki, Flagstaff and Port St Johns among others.

Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, also tabled his 2015/2016 policy speech in the Legislature this afternoon.

Qoboshiyane says his Department will continue to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of the Comprehensive Rural Development Programme, with a specific focus on the provision of basic services in rural areas.

He says out of the R1.97 billion budget for his department, almost R900 million will be spent on service delivery and in partnership with municipalities and the Department of Water and Sanitation, a total of 26 383 households and 61 schools will be provided with clean water.

Meanwhile, Roads and Public Works MEC, Thandiswa Marawu, tabled her policy speech yesterday.

She said of the Department's R4.25 billion rand budget, R1.3 billion will go towards construction and maintenance.
