A doctor and clinical manager in George has confirmed several cases of the H1-N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, in the Garden Route city. A Port Elizabeth man presenting swine flu symptoms was transferred to a Johannesburg Hospital on Thursday.
Doctor Marcelle Herbst from the practice, Walk in Doctor, says more than 20 patients in just one of her many practices were recently diagnosed with swine flu. She says most of the pharmacies in George ran out of the antiviral medication called Tamiflu due to the massive number of patients diagnosed.
Herbst says if patients are treated correctly, there is no reason for panic.
She says they know the airborne virus and how to treat it.
According to Herbst ,people with a weakened immune system and children under two are most susceptible to the virus.
She recommends that patients see their family doctor as soon as they start to experience symptoms such as high fever, an aching body and red eyes.
