Seven people died a gruesome death when they were burnt beyond recognition in an accident on the R61 road between Aberdeen in the Eastern Cape and Beaufort West in the Western Cape.
The Provincial Transport Department said the incident occurred on Saturday morning at about 07H15 about 20 kilometres outside Aberdeen.
Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the driver of an Opel Kadett with seven occupants, including three children, lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, catching alight.
He said the circumstances surrounding the cause of the accident are still unknown and investigations by various authorities including the National Department of Transport(RTMC) and Provincial SAPS.
A case of culpable homicide would be opened at Aberdeen Saps for further investigations.
