Settlement reached in Amathole District Municipality wage dispute

Amathole District Municipality workers are expected back at their posts on Wednesday following a month-long strike which saw taps running dry in several municipalities in the district.

Their representatives from both the South African Municipal Worker's and the Independent Municipal and Allied Unions struck an agreement with the employer on Monday.

The strike was provisionally suspended on Tuesday, pending a meeting with the workers.

The strike has now been called off after the workers' demand for an annual salary increase of 6.5% and a notch progression of 2.5% were finally met by the employer.

Amathole SAMWU regional spokesperson Lona Lubhedu says this is a victory for the workers. "They were happy with the proposal and after the meeting the agreement was signed at the CCMA. So I'm confident in saying that the strike is over and that everyone will be returning to work on Wednesday."
