Service provider appointed to deal with water crisis in Cradock

The Chris Hani District Municipality says it has appointed a service provider to deal with the water crisis in Cradock which has seen raw sewage flowing into the Great Fish River.

The situation is so bad that the National Department of Water and Sanitation said it would be taking legal action against the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality in Cradock.

The Municipality's waste-water treatment works has malfunctioned, sending raw sewage into the Fish River and the local council has been unable to address the situation satisfactorily in spite of directives given by the National Department.

Bhekisisa Mthembu, the Acting Municipal Manager at the Chris Hani District Municipality, says they've appointed a service provider to refurbish the water treatment works and to get the plant up and running.

Meanwhile, the Department of Water and Sanitation says its directive to the Local Municipality was for the local authority to take responsibility to stop the sewage flow into the Great Fish River.

Spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau, says the Inxuba Yethemba Municipality was also meant to provide a plan of action as to how this will be done.

Last week the DA's Midlands Constituency leader, Retief Odendaal, raised the alarm about the raw sewage flowing into the Fish River.

He has now welcomed the steps taken by the National Department of Water and Sanitation but says this issue has been going on since October, 2016.
