Eastern Cape police released the name of the police officer who was killed in a brazen attack in the Motherwell Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana identified him as 42-year-old Sergeant Mario Nel, who had been a police officer for 16 years.
Nel was shot and killed moments after his service pistol was stolen.
A suspect was arrested just moments later after a shoot-out with police.
Nel is the second Sergeant to be killed in the Eastern Cape this week.
On Monday, 41-year-old Sergeant Lwando Bunga attached to the Public Order Police (POP) unit in East London was killed when he responded to a cash-in-transit robbery in West Bank.
Brig Kinana says the killing of these members has sent shock-waves throughout the corridors of the SAPS in the Province and management has vowed to arrest those that are behind the slaughtering of the police officers.
"An attack on the police is an attack on the state, and for this reason, the police will not rest until the culprits are found," he said
