Residents in the Colleen Glen area in Nelson Mandela Bay have been warned to keep an eye on their pets following a poisoning incident reported to a local vet.
The Kragga Kamma Veterinary Hospital took to social media on Wednesday after a pet owner informed them that her dog might have ingested some poisoned meat.
A Veterinary Nurse, Claire Rousseau told Algoa FM News that the lady was not a client but simply needed advice on what to do if her dog showed any symptoms.
She says a sample of the meat was also brought in, two pieces of boerewors, with a clear slice down the middle, laced with an unknown substance.
Rousseau says the woman did not want to have the substance tested as there was a cost involved.
She says inside the boerewors was a purple granular substance which they suspect is a carbamate pesticide that is used in South Africa in the agricultural sector.
The pesticide is highly toxic to dogs and cats and owners should look out for symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea, salivating, muscle tremors and in the worst-case scenario, seizures that could be fatal.
Rousseau says cases of this kind of poisoning are very rare but in this case was clearly deliberate.
The woman was advised to open up a case with police but by Thursday morning no such case was opened.
Police Spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says not a single case of poisoning has been opened this week.
