A second learner from the Nzulula Primary School in the Eastern Cape has died following an attempt to kill a snake on the school grounds on Tuesday.
The learners put hand sanitiser on the grass and set it alight but the fire spread to a shed housing two 25 litres containers of sanitiser which subsequently burst.
Spokesperson Mali Mtima says another five learners are being treated for burn wounds, with one in a critical condition.
He says the Department of Education has sent out a team to offer counselling to both the learners and teachers.
The names and ages of the learners have not yet been released.
