Buffalo City Municipality said a search is underway for a person who is missing at Eastern Beach in East London.
Municipality spokesperson, Samnkelo Ngwenya, said Metro lifeguards tried in vain to rescue the person on Sunday evening.
He said the lifeguards were already walking home after finishing their duty when they spotted someone going under the water.
“They ran back to try and rescue (the person) but were unsuccessful. Our teams are still on the lookout for a sighting,” Ngwenya said.
He also urged anyone who may be missing a loved one to contact the nearest police station.
“With the start of the summer swimming season, we are calling on beachgoers to swim within demarcated areas where lifeguards are operating and not to swim after hours or whilst intoxicated. We also urge people to respect the ocean and not swim too deep,” Ngwenya said.
