The Catholic Church in the Eastern Cape is threatening to close two schools, due to non-payment of building rent by the province's education department.
The arrears amount is approaching the R1m mark, despite repeated efforts to rectify the matter.
The Democratic Alliance is furious about the state of affairs and has taken the matter up in the Bhisho legislature.
DA leader in the legislature, Bobby Stevenson says the Catholic church is owed over R900,000 in arrears on a number of schools which they lease to the government and they desperately need this money in order to maintain these schools, and they have been battling for over a year to get these funds and it is totally unacceptable that the government does not pay to them what is due to them and this kind of maladministration simply undermines education in the Eastern Cape.
