Schooling disrupted in Uitenhage

Schooling in the Uitenhage area is being disrupted because of ongoing protest action by local residents, who are unhappy about a shortage of housing.

Primary schools in the area are barley functioning, as scared teachers did not attend school and concerned parents fetched their children out of fear of intimidation.

Northern areas primary and secondary schools governing body chairperson, Lourens Mostert says some learners are not writing exams.

"They were afraid for their lives and they couldn't come to school, therefore some schools were closed and other grades could not write exams."

Mostert says one of the main disruptions is the roads that are closed.

"The roads were closed down and buses were denied access to come through to drop off children at schools."

Department of Education spokesperson, Mali Mtima has called for calm in the area.

"Our learners are writing examinations and we would like parents and community members to help us ensure that these exams are credible and learners are brought to school on time with no disruptions." says Mtima

Meanwhile, Uitenhage police say calm has returned to the 'northern areas', following violent protests on Thursday.

Spokesperson, warrant officer Gerda Swart says they are maintaining a strong presence in the area.
