Schooling in the Eastern Cape faces disruption a week after the start of the new school year.
Teacher's union Sadtu has thrown down the gauntlet to education superintendent-general, Modidima Mannya, calling for him to resign.
In a strongy worded statement this week, Sadtu blamed Mannya for the crisis in Easern Cape education, saying its members would not rest until he is relieved of his duties.
Sadtu's Eastern Cape secretary, Mncekeleli Ndongeni, says Mannya is refusing to reinstate hundreds of temporary teachers.
"As we speak the law-defying superintendent-general is refusing to accept back temporary teachers that have been reinstated by a court of the 20th of October 2011 into the employment of the Department of Education," he said.
"As we speak some schools will not commence properly because a number of educators are suspended indefinitely and without just cause by the law-defying superintendent-general of the our province," he continued.
The union has now called on its members to take action to put pressure on Mannya to step aside.
ANC secretary-general, Gwede Mantashe, is reportedly expected to meet union leaders in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.
