SAPS, Metro Police launch Operation Basadi in PE's northern areas

Eastern Cape police, assisted by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro police, conducted anti-gang and anti-drug operations in Arcadia, in the metro's northern areas on Saturday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni says Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-general Liziwe Ntshinga and Nelson Mandela Metro Police Chief  Yolanda Faro were also part of this women's month anti-crime 'Operation Basadi'.

"This is a provincial Women's Month operation, aimed at shaking up the area of Arcadia with marches by police, door-to-door searches, and to combat crime in the gang-invested area with law enforcement", he said.

"We expect to make arrests and recover drugs during the operation", Tonjeni said.

Eastern Cape Transport, Safety and Liaison MEC, Weziwe Tikana and Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Mongameli Bobani joined the Premier and his entourage at the Walker Drive Shopping Centre in Sherwood.

Tonjeni says the gathering was aimed at meeting parents who lost their loved ones because of gang violence.

Premier Mabuyane said as the provincial government, they needed to put a concrete plan in place that included local Municipalities, instead of saying fighting crime was a national responsibility.
