SAPS condemn EC mob killings

Eastern Cape police have issued a stern warning to the public not to take the law into their own hands.

This follows the murder of two men who were beaten to death by a mob in Cofinvaba on Thursday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Sibongile Soci, says community members allege that the two 25 year old men had allegedly been behind a spate of robberies in the area.

She says however that provincial police commissioner, Celiwe Binta, wants communities to work more closely with the police in bringing down crime.

"The message from the provincial commissioner is that the community members must respect the law and give the alleged offenders the opportunity to stand trial. The SAPS will not tolerate these types of behaviour because revenge-seekers often become criminals themselves," said Soci.

She says the police will have no option but to arrest them for their unlawful actions.
