The mayor of the Amathole District Municipality, Nomasikizi Konza, has handed over a sanitation project at e-Santini village near Butterworth.
ADM Spokesperson Siyabulela Makunga says more than 3000 VIP toilet structures were handed over and they will benefit 66 000 rural households.
He said this is part of Human Rights month and is a culmination of the sanitation project that was launched last year by President Jacob Zuma.
"One of the issues mentioned was that the issue of sanitation is a matter of human dignity. When me make these kinds of contribution we always remind ourselves about the historical atrocities that our people had to suffer during the apartheid, and looking at the conditions that are still confronting us in our rural communities" he said
The delivery of the sanitation project comes as the Amathole District Municipality faces a probe by the Public Protector's office for issuing a R631-million sanitation tender to Johannesburg based company Siyenza Group.
Its alleged that tender regulations had been flouted in the awarding of the tender to the company, which reportedly has strong ties to the families of top ANC officials including president Jacob Zuma and ANC secretary-general, Gwede Mantashe.
