The South African National Defence force confirmed Friday's incident in Port Elizabeth where approximately 15 members of the Army Support base carried out evictions, dumping 5 truckloads of furniture in front of the Municipality's City Hall.
The SANDF says in a statement they regret the events which unfolded and will co-operate fully with the police.
The incidents that followed the evictions of the three identified houses have been brought to the attention of the senior authorities. An urgent internal investigation has been launched and will run concurrently with the SAPS investigation to determine the sequence of events and the role(s) of all parties involved
The Soldiers carried out evictions of individuals who were identified to be occupying military houses against the rules.
Its believed that the furniture belonged to evicted persons connected to the army, but regardless of the circumstances, Acting City Manager Johann Mettler branded the actions of those involved as shocking.
He told AlgoaFM New he would be laying criminal charges against the SANDF in Port Elizabeth and be serving them with a court interdict.
