More than 200 SA Municipal Worker's Union Members employed by the Buffalo City Municipality marched down Oxford Street to East London City Hall on Friday afternoon.
At City Hall, they presented a memorandum to BCM Chief Whip Sangweni Matwele, who promised to take their grievances to Council and report back to them within ten days.
Nkosinathi Nombila, Samwu's regional secretary for the Amathole region, said they're calling on the Buffalo City Municipality to put an immediate halt to the outsourcing of work to private contractors and for the BCM to get rid of the controversial electronic attendance register.
"It is expensive to fix it even if you have to maintain it, you have to maintain it with big monies that will waste monies of the ratepayers. We are saying we are demanding an investigation as to how it was procured because by the time it was procured we were still discussing it at the local labour forum." said Nombila.
Nombila said they were also calling for BCM Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha - and other officials implicated in the Nelson Mandela funeral funds saga, to immediately step aside until the investigation is complete.
"The simple thing is we are saying, can you please respect and leave the office for now for the proper investigation. Once the investigation is concluded, if one has to go to the court of law to answer for herself that process must be done, if you are cleared come back to your office."
