Safety awareness appeal from SAPS water wing

Following several drownings and near-drownings around the country at the weekend, the SA Police Service water wing is calling for increased safety awareness.

On the official SAPS Facebook page, the water wing again appeals to parents, guardians, and all people using dams, rivers, lakes, beaches, and swimming pools for recreational purposes to be safety conscious.

It said a man downed in the La Mercy lagoon in KwaZulu-Natal and an unruly and apparently intoxicated crowd had to be dealt with by Tongaat police while the body was recovered.

Later, the body of a 25-year-old man was recovered by K9 search and rescue from a private dam near Port Elizabeth.

Police divers also recovered the body of a 14 year-old boy who drowned in Smelly Creek, in Deal Party, PE.

Police are still searching for the body of a 10-year-old boy from Gugulethu who is believed to have drowned off Clifton Beach in Cape Town.
