Safe and sober habits paramount this Summer Season – NMBM

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said that safety during the festive season is paramount, saying metro police will be out in numbers to enforce municipal by-laws.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, John Best, called for sober habits, warning that no alcohol will be allowed on city beaches, while drinking and driving will be strictly policed.

“We are NOT going to allow any alcohol on our beaches. The South African Police Services, Metro Police, and other Safety and Security apparatus have been informed and will take the necessary action,” said Best, at the launch of the Spar Delight in Summer programme on Tuesday.

“The only area where people will be allowed to consume alcohol is at the picnic site (opposite Summerstrand Inn) but please be aware our new Traffic Chief, Warren Prins, has been instructed to look out for those drivers that will attempt to drink and drive on our roads.”

“Last year we confiscated thousands of litres of alcohol and we will continue to do so. Before intoxicated people present a problem for lifeguards on the beaches, they will be taken away so that others can enjoy their experience,” Best said.

“I have been assured that the beachfront cameras will be fully operational from the beginning of December. This will enhance our monitoring capabilities and response to transgressions as well.”

“I can assure you there is a safety plan in place and we are working towards delivering a safe festive season in the same vein as last year,” MMC Best said.

The summer season kicks off with the traditional Opening of the Season at Hobie Beach on 16 December followed with a packed and improved entertainment line-up.

Best said that Nelson Mandela Bay supplemented its safety equipment with three new Yamaha jet skis, three rescue sleighs, three rubber ducks and three quad bikes to ensure greater efficiency by lifeguards.
