A Democratic Alliance march to the Eastern Cape Education Department's headquarters in Zwelitsha on Friday was met by a protest by members of the SA Democratic Teachers union.
The "Save our Teachers March" was led by DA parliamentary leader, Lindiwe Mazibuko and senior party officials.
The march aimed to draw attention to the plight of some 4000 teachers who will lose their jobs next year if the provincial education department goes ahead with the planned cut in teaching posts.
There are currently 64 752 teaching posts declared for 2012.
The DA says the post provision for 2013 stands at just 60 820 meaning that more than 4000 would be cut because of a lack of funds.
