South African Breweries signed a three year deal in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday morning with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Eastern Cape Local Government and the department of Traditional Affairs.
The Business Adopt-A-Municipality initiative is aimed specifically at the PE Metro utilising the skills of big business, in this case, those of SAB in the areas of customer care and service delivery.
Local Government and Traditional Affairs MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane welcomed the initiative attended by Metro Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile.
However, he tore a strip off the Metro for not having a municipal manager in place.
He gave the metro a deadline of 6 December to have a new manager in place.
"This Metro must contract and employ a municipal manager, simple and straight forward. How can we cause this mayhem once we know that the power to appoint is invested in the powers of the council? We fight over acting people since 2009 and we are saying this is giving us a bad name" Qoboshiyane said.
