SA authorities confirm a probe in wake of VW emission's scandal

The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications has confirmed that it will be instituting its own investigation in the wake of the VW emissions scandal in the United States.

The Regulator's Acting General-Manager for Automotive Division, Themba Kaula, says they've already made contact with VWSA on the matter.

Algoa FM News spoke to Kaula on Friday and asked him about the South African investigation.

"We need to make a comparative investigation to see whether the vehicles affected in the USA are also in South Africa in terms of their engines. We will then look at the test results supplied to us to see if the engines comply"

Kaula says if their probe shows non-compliance, there are sanctions that can be imposed on the car maker.

The NCRS do have a sanction process and can only be determined after the investigation.

The emissions scandal has led to the resignation of erstwhile VW AG boss, Martin Winterkorn, a massive drop in the company's share value and a call by German chancellor Angela Merkel for the car-maker to restore confidence in the brand.
