Rumours involving Enyobeni owners of grave concern to ECLB

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) has expressed its concern over rumours that the owners of the Enyobeni tavern were still selling alcohol despite their establishment being closed.

This follows an article in Drum Magazine where a parent of one of the deceased was quoted as saying that the owners were being insensitive by continuing to sell alcohol while the investigation is not yet concluded.

The spokesperson for the EC Liquor Board Mgwebi Msiya says the tavern owner Vuyokazi Ndevu and her husband Siyakhangela Ndevu only have one liquor license.

He says the licensing system reflects Enyobeni Tavern as the only liquor license that the authority legitimately granted to the owners.

Msiya urged members of the community to come forward with information if they have a reasonable suspicion that the Ndevu's are operating elsewhere.

ECLB also assured members of the public that the Enyobeni tavern in Scenery Park remains closed and will not operate until all the necessary investigations are completed.

The Ndevu's will be back in court in April next year for their trial to start.

During the previous court appearance, family members called on the accused to be charged with murder.

They face charges of selling or supplying intoxicating liquor to persons under the age of 18 as well as conniving and permitting employees and agents to sell or deliver alcohol to persons under age.

Twenty-one young people died at the tavern on the 16th of June while celebrating a so-called pens-down-party.

The exact cause of their death is still a mystery, although the post-mortems confirmed high traces of ethanol in their blood.
