Ruling expected on plans to build mosque in Knysna

A ruling is expected in the High Court in Cape Town on Wednesday in the case involving plans to build a mosque in Knysna.

The municipality had approved the proposed erection of the mosque in Rawson Street, but some Knysna residents are opposed to the idea - and a two-year court battle ensued.

Rawson Home owners supported by the Knysna Rate Payers Association approached the court to ask the decision be set aside. The Association claims the decision was taken without consulting the residents and that the plans violate at least 50 municipal by laws and regulations.

They say the proposal ignores height restrictions as well as building and parking regulations.

Rawson street home owners also claim that a traffic study was never conducted.

Judge Daniel Dlodlo from the Western Cape High court is expected to deliver his verdict in the matter.

The municipality's legal costs already exceeded a million rand.
