Rugby player dies after being swept out to sea

A young rugby player drowned at the Nahoon river mouth on Friday afternoon after he and 8 of his team mates were swept out to sea.

The players were reportedly from the North West Leopards under 19 and 21 teams.

Spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute Craig Lambinon pics up the story.

"A rugby team that had played rugby earlier had gone down to the beach they had waded into shallow water in the river mouth, unfortunately there was an outgoing tide and some of them got swept away. Two local surf-skiers Doug Copeland and Paul Proctor went to their assistance and in a relay brought all the men to shore. It was an extremely difficult rescue operation that they performed. Eight of them were suffering from severe exhaustion and near drowning symptoms and one was unconscious, breathless and unresponsive. Paramedics conducted extensive CPR but he was declared dead on the scene"

The deceased's body has been handed to a forensic pathologist.
