Rubber bullets fired as mob loots liquor truck in PE

SAPS

Port Elizabeth police have arrested three men following a violent confrontation with community members at Soweto-on-Sea.

Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says they’ve been charged with theft and public violence after a mob of more than 200 people tried to loot a truck carrying thousands of rands worth of liquor.

The truck driver was apparently on his way to Perseverance at around 8pm on Monday when he took a wrong turn into Johnson Road which leads into Soweto-on-Sea.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says while the driver was struggling to turn the large truck around, a group of people opened his driver’s door and grabbed the keys and his cellphone.

They then began looting the truck, and made off with an unknown amount of Gin.

Kwazakhele police members on patrol responded to the commotion and fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says three vehicles which were being used to load the liquor were seized by police and some R5000 worth of Gin was recovered.

The truck was safely removed from the area on Tuesday morning and the three suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
