Robbery suspect drowns at Bay beachfront

An armed suspect who tried to escape from police by hiding behind rocks in the ocean has drowned.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge says his body washed ashore on Kings Beach on Tuesday morning.

He says on Monday evening just after 8 pm, the victim and his accomplice allegedly robbed a 36-year-old man of his cell phone on Beach Road in Brookes Hill.

Captain Beetge says Metro Police officers on patrol saw what transpired and chased after the suspects.

He says as they arrested one of the suspects, aged 39, the victim dropped the firearm and ran into the ocean to hide behind big rocks.

SAPS Search and Rescue and the SAPS Diving Unit could not reach him due to rough sea conditions.

The suspect in custody is detained on a charge of armed robbery.
