The Chris Hani District Municipality in the Eastern Cape will commemorate the 20th anniversary of assassination of the SACP leader by hosting a road race in his honour.
The race will be run on Freedom Day, following the 20km route that Hani used to take to and from school while growing up in rural Eastern Cape.
The mayor of the District Municipality, Mxolisi Koyo, says the municipalities in the area will hold special commemorative events on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a commemoration ceremony is underway in Boksburg for the slain SACP leader.
People wearing red T-shirts bearing Chris Hani's face streamed into a marquee at a memorial park.
President Jacob Zuma was among those who arrived for the wreath-laying ceremony at the Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park in Elspark, east of Johannesburg.
