George Residents are urged to use water sparingly after a pipe burst caused a section of a road to collapse.
Spokesperson Athane Scholtz says residents must stay away from Genevafontein as a section of Herriot street, north of Geneva collapsed.
Photographs shared on social media showed a car disappearing into a massive sinkhole.
According to the police, nobody was injured in the incident.
Scholtz says water gushed out for several hours but is now subsiding as the necessary valves have been closed.
She says the pipe supplies the town’s main water treatment works, which means that water cannot be pumped into the facility’s holding dams at the moment.
Properties in the eastern suburbs of George, including Kraaibosch and surrounds, may experience some drop in water pressure.
Scholtz says Civil engineering teams are on-site and will be working for the rest of Saturday and through the night to do the necessary repairs.
