Eight buses worth R12 million have been destroyed by fire at the Algoa Bus depot in NU 8, Motherwell.
Captain Andre Beetge says the fire started in one of the buses at around 9 pm on Wednesday night.
He told Algoa FM News that 10 buses were parked tightly in a row at the depot and that the fire quickly spread from one bus to another.
In all, eight buses were destroyed.
Security personnel on duty were able to save two of the buses.
Captain Beetge said it was too early to say if the fire was deliberately started and was part of the violent protests which have been rocking the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro this week.
He said there would be more clarity once the fire department has completed its investigations.
In terms of trouble-spots in the Metro this morning, Beetge says he’s received reports of roads being blocked in Kamesh where police are on the scene.
He says protestors have also been burning lamp posts and other objects on the Rocklands road at the Eagles Nest turnoff and that Kabega Park police are in attendance.
Algoa Bus announced on Wednesday that they would not be running bus services during the taxi strike to protect their staff, customers and their assets.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Cape Health Department is bemoaning the impact that the current strikes and protests are having on the provision of health services.
Spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, says the disruption to public transport and blocking of roads, is having a negative impact on health workers who cannot get to work.
