Rhodes University name change debate has never been closed

Rhodes University Vice Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela, says the debate about a name change at the university has never been closed.

Earlier this week, students staged protests, asking questions about the slow pace of transformation and inclusivity at Rhodes.

Speaking to Algoa FM News, Mabizela says he was hurt by reports in print media in which he apparently said that the debate had been closed.

Mabizela says he could of never said anything of this sought while encouraging debate at the same time.

"What I have said consistently, is that if we are to have a productive debate and a healthy discussion on this matter we must respect each others views. We should never try to de-legitimise, trivialise or be dismissive of each others views and experiences. I think we should use the power of reason, logic, argument and debate on such an important matter."
