The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has announced that in light of escalating protests, tensions and violence within the sector, management has decided it cannot safely resume operations on Tuesday.
It says as a result, operations and academic activities of NMMU will remain suspended until further notice - although it is still their hope to complete the 2016 academic year as planned. The higher education sector has been facing protest action across the country since Education Minister Blade Nzimandeâs announcement was made a week ago in respect of fees for 2017.
NMMU has been closed since last Wednesday.
NMMU Management held meetings with two student formations in George, and at the Kraal on the South Campus in Port Elizabeth, on Monday. It says that at the meeting at the Kraal, it soon became apparent that the students present were not prepared to accede to managementâs request that the university re-open, while engagements continue.
Meanwhile: The Student's independent news source at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, Activate, says meetings between students and management took place throughout Monday. A decision was subsequently taken to also suspend classes for Tuesday while discussions around free education continue.
