Reward offered for info on motorist who killed cyclist in EL

Andrew Wienand

supplied

Two siblings, originally from the Eastern Cape, are heading to South Africa to attend the memorial service for their father.

East London businessman, 60-year-old Andrew Wienand was cycling on the Amalinda on-ramp just off the N2 on Saturday morning when he got struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.

Although police are following up strong leads, no arrests have been made.

The news of Andrew's death has devastated his two adult children who have lost both their parents in cycling accidents.

Wienand's son and daughter who live in Canada and Australia, are still mourning the death of their mother Michelle who died while cycling in March 2019.

Michelle worked as Hostel Catering Manager at Connaught House at Clarendon High School and was riding on the Tradouw Pass on the R324 when she was injured.

She was treated at the Swellendam hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Reward

As tributes continue to pour in for Wienand, a family friend has now offered a reward of R25 000 for information that will lead to the successful arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

A source told Algoa FM News that local police had strong leads but needed more information to bring the motorist to book.

A spokesperson for Provincial Traffic Unathi Binqhose said although eyewitnesses gave police valuable information, he appealed to the motorist responsible to come forward as the failure to do so will result in the perpetrator facing more severe charges.

Police are currently investigating a case of culpable homicide and fleeing from the scene of an accident.

Anyone with information can contact the Investigating Officer Sergeant Ndiko Kopolo on 071 475 1658.

Kopolo, who is stationed at the Cambridge Police Station along with his commanding officer, welcomed the reward.

Andrew, who matriculated from Selborne College in 1981, was also the former President of the Leander Rowing Club and played a pivotal role as a regatta official for many years.

Friends and family are invited to attend his memorial service in East London next week.

The service will be held in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Chamberlain Road at 12.30 pm on the 29th of July.
