Reward offered by SAPS to solve murder of pregnant government employee

Police in Qonce (formerly King Williams Town) are appealing for assistance from the public to solve the murder of a pregnant woman who was assassinated outside her house in June last year.

The 35-year-old Sibahle Sowazi was employed in local government and was the personal assistant to the MEC of Cogta, Xolile Nqata.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says police have now offered a reward of R50 000 for information that could lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of the suspects involved.

She says it is alleged that Sowazi dropped off her partner, a taxi owner, at a local restaurant before returning home in his white Audi Q7.

Colonel Naidu says according to witness statements, as the victim got out of the vehicle to open the gate, she noticed two unknown men carrying firearms, running towards her.

Sowazi immediately ran back to her vehicle but was gunned down as she entered her car.

Colonel Naidu says although statements have been obtained from all witnesses, police efforts to trace the suspects have been futile at this stage, hence the cash reward.

She says according to the Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Lwazi Nkosana, the motive for the murder is unclear but it is believed that Sowazi was the target.
