Retired policeman killed in double murder and house robbery in Bay

Riaan van Aswegen (53)

Police in Gqeberha are investigating a double murder after a retired police officer and his tenant were shot and killed during a house robbery in Bluewater Bay on Friday morning.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the lounge window of the home, which has been converted into a frail care centre in Riverside Drive, was forced open and entry gained at about 3 a.m.

She says once in the home the suspects split up and went to the male and female section of the house.

Colonel Naidu says one 55-year-old resident was shot in the head as he came out of his room and died on the scene.

She says the co-owner of the facility, 53-year-old Riaan van Aswegen was shot in the head when he rushed out of his room to see what had happened.

His body was found in the passage of the house.

Before his retirement, van Aswegen was stationed at the Algoa Park Police Station.

Colonel Naidu says the suspects stole four phones, jewellery and two TV sets before exiting the house through the sliding door.

She says the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit in Gqeberha are on the hunt for three suspects involved.

The name of the other victim is being withheld until his next of kin has been informed.
