Rioting in KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay has calmed down this morning after it reached a particularly tense moment last night.
Between 5 000 and 7 000 protesters moved through the streets of KwaNonqaba last night and police had to make use of teargas and stun grenades in order to control the rioting crowds.
Today is the fourth day of a service delivery protest that includes complaints about electricity that was cut off in areas such as Elangeni.
The Mossel Bay Municipality has however denied this.
They are deeply concerned about the events of the past few days and for the safety of the town's residents.
Executive Mayor Marie Ferreira says they understand that the main source of conflict is a notice which was issued regarding illegal electrical connections, mainly in Thembalihle, Mfuleni and Sijaji Streets in KwaNonqaba.
She said the Municipality was concerned at the safety hazards posed by these connections, particularly for children where these connections are laid over public roads.
Ferreira said, however, that for humanitarian reasons she's undertaken to postpone any disconnections until talks have been held with the leaders of the affected communities - hopefully within the next two days.
