Rehabilitated penguins released into the ocean off PE

The 16 penguins which were rescued in July following an oil spillage in Algoa Bay were released back into the ocean at the St Croix Islands on Friday.

The penguins were rescued by SANParks Marine Rangers and were treated at the Port Elizabeth centre of the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds.

Nearly 200 penguins were affected when almost 400 litres of oil spilled into the ocean during a bunkering operation off the Port of Ngqura.

SANParks Marine Section Ranger, Henvik Visser facilatated the release.

He said "one adult and 15 blues" were released onto the St Croix Island which holds the world's highest population of African penguins with a total of 5860.

Visser said nine more penguins are still being rehabilitated at Sanccob and will be released at a future date.
