Refuse collection has finally resumed in the Makana municipality after council workers embarked on a go-slow in February.
Workers demanded protective clothing which finally got delivered on the 29th of March.
Makana Mayor Mzukisi Mpahlwa says they have established an interim waste management committee which will serve as a platform for dialogue between the public and the business sector.
He says the town of Makhanda also struggles with illegal dumping which can cause a serious health hazard such as rat infestations.
In response to the huge challenges in waste management, including the problem of dumping, Mpahlwa said the municipality had drafted an Integrated Waste Management Plan (IWMP) in line with the requirements of the National Environmental Management Waste Act, which was open for public comment.
