The Bitou Municipality at Plettenberg Bay says it's working hard to clear the backlogs in refuse removal.
The Municipality says all five of its refuse compactor trucks are out of action and work to have them repaired is being expedited.
Bitou spokesperson, Manfred van Rooyen, says they have been using private contractors to clear the refuse removal backlogs but he says with the financial year end looming, funds have been depleted.
He says currently only a few trucks and bakkies from the municipal fleet are being utilised to assist with refuse collection which has contributed to the backlog and the limited service available.
In an official statement the Municipality calls this crisis an opportune time to remind consumers and residents to reduce waste, to recycle and re-use waste, particularly given the huge cost implications to transport solid waste to landfill sites in Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn with the only landfill site in Bitou that had to close in terms of the applicable license conditions imposed by provincial government.
