Red Tide: Latest

Scientists from the Knysna Basin Project and Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries have found no evidence of toxicity of the red tide in Knysna.

Sanparks says the red tide appears to be greatly reduced in Knysna although still evident in Tsitsikamma and surrounds, and that there have been no incidents of human illness reported to them as a result of the red tide.

And: With the red tide bloom having decayed in most parts of Algoa Bay, swimmers in this weekend's SPAR River Mile Festival have also been assured they'll have no reason to fear any lingering effects on the Sundays River.

According to estuarine ecology expert, Professor Janine Adams of NMMU, the red tide had been localised below the N2 bridge and that swimming above the bridge at Cannonville, where the race takes place, would be safe.

Competitors in both the 1 kilometre and 2 kilometre Ocean swims swam undeterred off Hobie Beach on Sunday in the fortnightly Ocean Racing series, despite a distinct red hue still being visible in the water.
