Red Cross doctor examines Motherwell rape victim

A doctor from the Red Cross Children's Hospital has examined the eight-year-old Port Elizabeth girl who survived an horrific rape two years ago.

The girl now wears a colostomy bag as a result of the injuries she suffered in the attack in Motherwell in December 2011.

Her attacker, 33-year old Xolile Tose, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Port Elizabeth High Court earlier in April.

Advocate Linda le Roux of the National Prosecuting Authority, says the doctor who examined the girl believes a positive impact can be made on her life through additional surgery.

She says he will now meet the Head of the Colorectal Clinic at the Red Cross Children's Hospital to map out a treatment plan for the child, whose medical expenses are being covered by private donors.

"He said that there is definitely going to be a positive change for her life, and this was what we are hoping and praying for. We want her to live a full life after this ordeal. On the medical side it looks like there is a good chance for her to heal totally"

Le Roux added that the Department of Social Development is playing a big role in taking care of the child and her family.

"The Department of Social Development is playing a huge role at this stage by taking care of the whole family, making sure they are safe. The are also being put through life skill programmes to ensure that they can heal from these wounds emotionally" she said
