Rapist who offered R2000/pm to stay out of jail, imprisoned

A 57-year-old Eastern Cape man has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl.

Police Captain Jackson Manatha says Mlindeli Giba was sentenced in the Butterworth Regional Court for the rape in May 2015 at Skiet informal settlement near the town.

He says the victim reported the matter to the neighbour and the neighbour contacted her father who was at work at the time.

Captain Manatha says Giba promised to give the victim’s father a sum of R2000 every month if he did not report the case to police.

The father refused, and Giba was arrested.
