Pufferfish washing up along the coastline

The Mossel Bay Municipality has been receiving reports of pufferfish washing up along the coastline.

Spokesperson, Nickey le Roux says the pufferfish seems to be washing up on beaches between Port Elizabeth and Mossel Bay.

She says municipal workers will continue to remove the dead fish from beaches.

These fish may vary in colour but are predominantly beige and brown with spots.

These fishes are extremely poisonous.

According to Wikipedia, the majority of pufferfish species are toxic and some are among the most poisonous vertebrates in the world.

These fish have also reportedly been spotted at Cape Recife in Port Elizabeth.

It is not yet known why these vertebrates are being spotted along the coast.
