Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature Speaker Helen Sauls-August has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Public Protector Advocate Busi Mkhwebane.
It was signed in Bhisho on Wednesday during the provincial road-show by the Public Protector which began earlier this week.
"This MOU details how we will cooperate to ensure that investigations that are brought to the attention of the Speaker on issues detailing ethical governance will be dealt with and investigated through our committees in the Legislature," Sauls-August said.
She said it also placed an "onerous responsibility" on her as the Speaker to ensure any recommendations made by the Public Protector must be implemented by the Eastern Cape Legislature.
Addressing members of the Eastern Cape Executive, including Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, the Public Protector said that if they lived by the rules, "you will never have to worry about getting a visit from my investigators".
"But, should it happen that my office is asked to look into allegations of impropriety against you, Hon. Premier or any of your MECs, I hope that you will choose President Mandela’s way of dealing with scrutiny," Advocate Mkhwebane said.
