PSAM at Rhodes University calls for tougher action against errant Members of Parliament

The Public Service Accountability Monitor at Rhodes University has called for tougher action against errant Members of Parliament who flout the rules of the House.

PSAM director, Jay Kruuse, says while the number of MP's who failed to declare their interest on time in 2013 dropped to 62 from 69 the previous year, he says they should be disciplined beyond just naming and shaming them.

On Wednesday parliament issued a statement calling on the MP's to to take the declaring of their financial interests very seriously.

But, Kruuse says the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members Interests should recommend to Parliament that serious action, beyond a mere reprimand and publication of names of implicated MP, be taken, especially in instances where MPs have repeatedly failed to account on time.
