Protesting students wreaked havoc at the Nelson Mandela Mandela University (NMU) in Gqeberha by blocking entrances to the North and South campuses on Wednesday morning.

The group of about 30 protestors who burnt tyres and used goalposts to block entrances had to be dispersed by NMU Protection Services.

The students' demands include that the University release their National Student Financial Aid Scheme allowances earlier than the 25th of each month.

According to a statement released by NMU, students demand that their allowances be released on the 15th of each month.

NMU spokesperson, Zandile Ngwendu confirmed that the ongoing reassessments and the usual business operations would continue.

"Mandela University views the safety of its students and staff as a priority.

"Additional security is being posted at exam venues to prevent any possible disruption."

Ngwendu added that Management would meet with the Student Representative Council (SRC) today.

In a statement written to NMU Management, SRC President Yiva Makrwede says it is important to disburse living allowances from Monday to allow students to be able to return for their re-assessments and get immediate necessities for them to be able to focus on their academics.

"Lastly, the SRC must register that we will not accept any response except the date for the disbursement of allowances.

"WE DONT WANT TO HEAR ENGLISH PLEASE (stet)", the correspondence reads.
