An Eastern Cape serial rapist whose reign of terror spanned across the province has been sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of rape, and housebreaking with the intent to rape.
Acting Judge Lydia Monakali sentenced Sipho Mjuza, 49, in the Bhisho High Court on Tuesday.
He was handed a life sentence on a charge of rape of an elderly woman plus an additional 23 years on a separate charge of rape and housebreaking.
According to court documents, the rapes had taken place in Bhisho, Zwelitsha, Grahamstown, Dimbaza, and the Centane (Mthatha) area from September 2008 to December 2015.
Most of the complainants were elderly women, with some unable to testify because they suffered from Dementia.
Mjuza tormented the women by breaking into their homes and then raping them.
Some of the complainants were strangled, and or assaulted.
He was arrested and convicted on an unrelated charge of rape and housebreaking that happened on 13 December 2015 in East London.
As a result of this conviction, Mjuza's DNA was placed in the database of the Forensic Science Laboratory.
He was linked to the charges he was convicted of on Tuesday at a later stage, through DNA evidence.
Advocate Nocwaka Tokota appeared on behalf of the state.
